Vegetarian hot dog

Having been a vegetarian all my life, hot dogs were never on my radar. In the past few years, meat substitutes have become a big thing and I can see how they appeal to folks who are trying to incorporate more plant based foods into their diet. I wanted to try these meat substitutes and decided to give vegan sausages a go. I bought a bag at the grocery store and was quite impressed by how good they tasted. While I have no idea if they taste anything like a real sausage, I definitely can think of ways to incorporate vegan sausages into my meals. I wanted to try and recreate that vegan sausage at home. This is my attempt at doing so. I think they turned out pretty good, my benchmark for comparison being the store bought vegan sausage. Here, I have used them to make vegetarian hot dogs but these sausages can be added to several dishes like pasta, breakfast hash, pizza topping etc. Get creative with them.

Makes 4 sausages | Prep. time: 30 minutes | Cook time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp. soy sauce

  • 2 tbsp. nutritional yeast

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion granules

  • 1 tsp mixed Italian herbs

  • 1/2 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth

  • 1/4 cup oat flour

  • 1/2 cup coarse ground whole wheat flour

  • 6 jarred sun dried tomatoes, finely chopped

  • Hot dog buns and condiments of your choice

Directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the soy sauce, nutritional yeast, dried herbs and spices. Add the vegetable broth and give it a good whisk.

  2. Next, add the oat and wheat flour and chopped sun dried tomatoes. With a fork, blend the flour into the liquid. The consistency of the mixture should be that of a wet dough, but not runny. If needed, add more wheat flour or more vegetable broth to get the right consistency.

  3. Prepare 4 pieces of food grade plastic wrap and 4 pieces of aluminum foil (at least 8 inches wide each).

  4. Divide the mixture into four equal parts. Lay one of the prepared pieces of plastic wrap flat on the counter. Spoon enough sausage mixture for one sausage onto the plastic and spread to form a 4 inch log. Use the plastic wrap to shape the mixture into a sausage. Twist the ends (like a candy wrapper) to encase the sausage in the wrap. Use rubber bands, if needed, to hold the ends together. Wrap this plastic wrapped sausage in the prepared piece of foil. Repeat process for the rest of the sausages.

5. Steam the sausages for 20 minutes in a steamer. Let them rest for about 10 minutes before opening up the foil and plastic wrappers.

6. Optional step: Heat a tablespoon of oil in a skillet and fry the sausages for a couple minutes on each side till they turn golden brown.

7. Serving suggestion: Place sausage on a hot dog bun and top with condiments or toppings like ketchup, mustard, relish, shredded lettuce, mayo or anything else you fancy. Enjoy!
