Who doesn't love a hearty plate of pasta in marinara sauce? It is always tempting to reach for a jar of store-bought pasta sauce to pour over some cooked pasta but after you try this marinara sauce recipe, you will realize how easy it is to make your own sauce. This sauce is ready in 15 minutes and can be made in advance and refrigerated in an air tight container for up to 1 week.
Serves: 2
Ingredients:
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp finely chopped garlic
1/2 medium white onion, finely chopped
1 15 oz. can crushed tomatoes
1 tsp salt
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
2 tsp honey (or sweetener of your choice)
12-15 fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped
Directions:
Heat olive oil in a pan and fry the garlic and onions till golden brown.
Add the crushed tomatoes and turn the heat to medium low. Allow to cook for 5 minutes.
Season with salt, pepper and crushed red pepper and continue cooking for 5 more minutes
Add roughly chopped basil leaves and honey. Turn heat off after 2 minutes.
That's it! It's that easy.
Serving suggestions:
I served the pasta over some tri-color rotini and added sliced, pan fried, plant based sausage for protein.
